The art of memoir karr5/19/2023 Since much of Karr’s time these days is spent as a Professor of Literature at Syracuse University-her seminars are apparently impossible to get into-it’s appropriate that her newest book, this week’s The Art of Memoir, is devoted to teaching. In The Liars’ Club, Cherry, and Lit, Karr ruthlessly and good-humoredly chronicled first her unconventional upbringing, the daughter of a live-wire occasionally-unhinged alcoholic mother in backwater East Texas, then her sexual coming of age, and finally her reckoning with her own alcoholism in the face of motherhood (she has a 29-year-old son with her ex-husband, the poet Michael Milburn, and has now been sober for more than two decades). In a publishing landscape bursting at the seams with memoir, the poet, writer, and teacher Mary Karr has made a name for herself as one of the genre’s foremost practitioners.
